Summer Programmes

(Download PDF - Summer Brochure - 4.2 MB)

Our summer programmes are an exciting and effective way for you to improve your English while living and studying in one of the world’s most famous, stimulating, and beautiful cities.

In the Mornings

Beginning at 9:00 a.m., you will have three hours of General English lessons in a group of no more than twelve students. Our qualified teachers will help you improve your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. During the summer months there is a greater emphasis on games and activities within the lessons.

The summer lessons for students aged 15+ normally take place at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford or elsewhere outside Bocardo House, such as the Oxford Union or one of the other world-renowned Oxford University colleges. Bocardo House is the main site for our English classes for junior students and young learners. 15 year olds will be taught in the same classes as 16+ students (the average age of our students is 17/18) either in Bocardo House or at another of our summer campuses.

In the Afternoons

After lunch, you have several choices:

  • Most students join our social activities leaders for an enjoyable local outing, such as punting on the river, touring one of the historic Oxford colleges, or enjoying cream tea in a café.
  • Adult students can join a 2-hour group lesson (Intensive English, INT25) to focus on conversation and listening skills.
  • Students of any age can have one-to-one lessons with a private teacher in any subject area (Business English, Academic English, Medical English, etc.).
  • You can explore Oxford on your own, or with family, friends, or classmates.
  • All students under the age of 18 are strongly advised to attend a full-time programme (15 hours of morning lessons plus afternoon lessons/activities). Any student under the age of 18 choosing not to attend afternoon activities/lessons must obtain written permission from a parent or guardian.

Accommodation

If you choose the Host Family programme, we will arrange for you to stay with an British family, taking breakfast and the evening meal with them. During mealtimes, you can chat with your host family about your day and life in England. Our students often keep in touch with their host families long after the summer is over.

Social Life

In the afternoons, if you are not taking English lessons, you may choose to join our programme of afternoon social activities (please refer to the package prices for details). Our afternoon activities programme includes visits to local museums, sightseeing, and various participatory outdoor activities, such as punting and football. Social activities generally run from 1:30pm and are finished by 4:00pm.

At the weekends, we offer excursions to nearby sights such as London, Stonehenge, the Roman city of Bath, and Shakespeare’s birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon.

In your lessons, you will meet many other students from all over the world. In your free time, you can explore Oxford with your new friends, visiting the many nightclubs, restaurants, shops, and parks the city has to offer. Be sure to exchange email addresses with your classmates so you can stay in contact after your summer programme has finished!
