English for Aviation
for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers

The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) state that all airline and helicopter pilots who fly internationally, and all air traffic controllers who provide services to international flights must have a minimum level of English.

CIE is offering an English for Aviation course designed specifically to help students reach this ICAO Operational Level 4. The language descriptors (developed by ICAO) show what a student must be able to do in order to pass this level.

The course will focus on the following aspects of language:

  • Pronunciation: Focussing on improving pronunciation in all spoken work-related situations to a level where the student is intelligible to the aeronautical community
  • Structure: Learning appropriate grammatical structures and sentence patterns which can then be used creatively and are well-controlled
  • Vocabulary: Extending knowledge of work-related vocabulary so student is able to communicate effectively on work-related topics
  • Fluency: Building up the ability to speak at length and with relative ease on familiar and relevant topics
  • Comprehension: Understanding of work-related topics with a range of different accents
  • Interactions: Increasing ability to respond immediately, appropriately and informatively and ensuring students are able to deal with misunderstandings

Our Aviation English courses are conducted in closed groups in order to focus on specific aviation requirements towards the appropriate language level. A typical course structure would be an intensive week (25 hours) of Aviation English incorporating the following topics:

  1. Introduction to air communications
  2. Pre-flight
  3. Ground movements
  4. Departure, climbing, and cruising
  5. En route events
  6. Contact and approach
  7. Landing
  8. On the ground

The course duration can range between 2 and 24 weeks depending on the entry language level of participants and the desired outcome from the course.
