Meet our Teachers

All of our academic subject teachers are qualified, experienced, and professional. Our academic programmes are accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC), which requires that our teachers have appropriate teaching qualifications, such as a Bachelors or Masters degree and/or a PGCE in the subject they are teaching.

Our English language courses are accredited by the British Council, which requires that our teachers have certificate-level teaching qualifications such as the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults).

If you register to study at CIE for more than 4 weeks, you will be assigned a personal tutor who meets with you regularly and makes sure you are happy with your classes and your host family.

Amy
English Language, Exam Preparation

Amy completed her CELTA in November 2008 and started working at CIE in March 2009. During her time here she not only has taught English but also has been involved in activities with closed groups and with our long term students. She has taught students at the Beginner level all the way up to Advanced. She has also taught one-to-one classes and has had some experience in preparing students for IELTS and FCE certificates.

When she is not working, she enjoys listening to music, going to concerts and most of all, going to the theatre. Amy also speaks French and Spanish and gets great enjoyment out of spending time with native speakers of these languages and learning about their cultures and history.

Irma
English Language, Young Learners

After qualifying as a teacher, Irma taught English and led after-school clubs and activities for four years in a secondary school in Vilnius, Lithuania. She also had an unforgettable two-month voluntary experience in a primary school in Nairobi, Kenya. Irma joined CIE in June 2006 as an activity leader and EFL teacher and gained her DELTA qualification in 2009. Her interests include sports, travelling, drama and movies.

Ann
English Language, Exam Preparation

Ann has been teaching English to foreign students for some years both in England and abroad, in groups and one-to-one.

Before starting her job at CIE, Ann lived and worked in Greece (Athens and Crete) for two years, teaching English and learning Modern Greek part-time. "The problems one encounters in learning a language is useful experience for teaching one," she says. Before that, she worked as a volunteer in the old city of Jerusalem, which involved teaching English in different parts of the old city and in nearby locations. "In both these countries I also gained experience in teaching students with a different writing script from ours," she notes.

Ann has been working as an English teacher at CIE for the past four and a half years, during which time she has taught both groups and one-to-one students. "I have had particular experience in teaching IELTS," she says, "preparing students for the exam in order for them to gain entry into British universities."

Ann believes that CIE's being a small language school with a friendly family atmosphere enables teachers to give individual attention to the students. "Teaching at CIE has been a valuable time for me," she remarks, "both from this point of view and for the wide variety of teaching experience I have gained, as well as getting to know students from all over the world."

Jon
English Language, Business English

Jon has been a teacher since he got his CELTA certificate in 2004. He has mainly worked in Spain, teaching both general and business English in companies such as Carrefour, Cisco Systems, MTV, and BNP Paribas. He also has experience in working with younger students, teaching in both schools and language academies. In addition, Jon has been involved with special courses working with the unemployed for the Madrid Community Government.

"I moved back to England in June 2010 and have been working at CIE ever since," Jon reports. "I love working here because both the relationships between teachers and between teachers and students are the best I have ever experienced in my working life. I also believe that the wonderful mix of so many different nationalities is extremely beneficial for both cultural and pedagogical reasons."

As he has lived most of his life in Madrid, Spain, he is fluent both in English and Spanish, having also studied French all my life. Jon loves travelling, reading, climbing, playing videogames, martial arts, painting, and any sport that has to do with mountains. Jon says, "My life ambition is to be able to travel around the world teaching English."

Olivia
English Language, Business English, Exam Preparation

Olivia qualified as an English teacher after she left University in 2007. Since then she has taught in both Spain and Argentina to juniors, adults and business people. She joined CIE in 2008 and throughout her time here has taught groups and individuals of all ages and all levels from beginners to advanced. She has also prepared students for IELTs, FCE and CAE exams.

Alongside her EFL teaching experience she has been involved in organising activities for juniors in summer camps in the UK and Poland and has worked as a teaching assistant in a UK based secondary school.

Having studied Human Geography she has a great interest in learning about different cultures and meeting new students from all over the world and says this is one of the most enjoyable factors of the job.

John
English Language, Pre-University

In addition to his responsibilities as Principal, John takes a keen interest in teaching. Possessing Qualified Teacher Status and TEFL qualifications, John has a wide teaching experience. He taught A-Level History when he was Deputy Head of Cheney School, Oxford and for a short time taught A-Level Sociology at Sibford School and History at the College Stendhal in Grenoble, France. More recently, at Wycombe Abbey School—one of the top boarding schools in the UK—John taught A-Level History, Politics, Philosophy and History of Art, and helped prepare students for Oxbridge entry. At CIE, he has enjoyed making his contribution to both the General English and Foundation Business Studies courses, and taught the Philosophy component of the Pre-University course for Chuo Suginami High School.

John Hudson, Principal

Luke
English Language

Luke is CIE's Academic Manager, but he also enjoys teaching regularly. He began his teaching career in Turkey, where he stayed for two years, including 18 months in Istanbul. He then taught in Oxford for 5 years before moving to Spain, where he taught English in companies, universities, and in his own school for 6 years before finally returning to Oxford in 2007. Luke coaches junior rugby at the weekend, although cricket is his sporting passion. He likes travelling, reading, films, and generally spending time with family as well. He looks forward to showing you a bit of Oxford, a city he has grown to love, and hopes that your time at CIE inspires you to improve on your English.
